Run-club relay

For run clubs and gyms with a running community: teams of four take turns on a short measured loop. No equipment beyond a handover zone, and the TV leaderboard turns a social run into a race night.

How it runs

  • Eight 1 km legs per team: runners go in order 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4, so everyone runs twice with a rest between.
  • Each handover is a checkpoint: a judge at the handover zone taps the team as the incoming runner crosses the line, which gives every runner their own leg time on the split card.
  • Waves of 6–10 teams every 5 minutes keep the loop uncrowded.

Divisions and placeholder loads

These loads are placeholders chosen to be easy to plate in a typical gym. Set your own in the planner; sled loads include the sled.

  • Mixed team (4): Relay of 4
  • Open team (4): Relay of 4
  • Pairs: Relay of 2

How many athletes fit

With the default 8 lanes and a heat every 5 minutes from 09:00. “Done by” adds 50 minutes to the last start — a planning assumption for a typical gym athlete on this course (30–50 min), not a measured figure. Pairs and relay teams take one lane each.

Judging this format

  • Handovers happen inside a marked zone with a hand touch or a band passed over.
  • One judge at the handover line can time every team in the wave by tapping the team as each runner arrives.

Variations

  • Pairs: two runners alternate four times each.
  • Add a single station at the handover (for example 10 burpees) to make it a run-and-station relay.
